Library Resources Acquisition and Catalogues Organization Division

Head of the Division - Galina Grigoryevna Bondar

Objectives of the Division:

• Formation of the Library’s resources in accordance with the profile of the University and the informational needs of readers;

• Keeping a record of the incoming and outgoing literature;

• Coordination of the Division’s activities with faculties, departments, and other structural units of the University;

• Cooperation with publishers and booksellers in Kazakhstan and the CIS;

• Provision of full and prompt scientific processing of documents;

• Formation of the reference and search tools.

Functions of the Division:

• Performing on-going and additional acquisition of library resources

• Drawing up pre-orders based on applications from departments and library divisions according to the lists of book selling firms and book shops;

• Acquisition of documents from various sources; subscribing to periodicals and subscription publications;

• Organization of the Division’s reference and search tools (in electronic form):

• 1) card catalog of current acquisition and executed orders;

• 2) card catalog for registration of periodicals;

• 3) card catalog of non-inventory account.

• Document processing according to classifications and catalogues;

• Organization and maintenance of the library’s reference and search tools.

• educational and scientific literature;

• publications of public figures;

• monographs;

• collections of research papers;

• proceedings of conferences;

• dissertations and abstracts;

• popular scientific periodicals;

• continued editions;

• brochures;

• imaginative literature;

• special normative and technical documentation;

• over 300 titles of magazines and newspapers in the Kazakh, Russian and foreign languages;

• works by academic staff members;

• CDs.

For September 01, 2015, the Library resources amount to 897 138 copies, including 709 837 books, 76 270 journals, 926 sets of newspapers, 4 654 special normative and technical documents (Construction Rules and Regulations, Unified Norms and Prices, etc.), 6 350 dissertations and abstracts, 95 060 brochures, 4 041 documents on electronic media (floppy disks, audio cassettes, video cassettes, CDs, DVDs). The number of documents in the official language: 197 370. The number of documents in foreign languages: 7 152.

Scientifically grounded and prompt presentation of the library’s resources is carried out through electronic and traditional catalogues. The catalogue system of the scientific library of PSU includes:

• Electronic catalogue (DB “Books”, DB “Dissertations”);

• General Alphabetical Catalogue;

• Readers Alphabetical Catalogue (with selected rows in the Kazakh and Russian languages);

• Systematic Catalogue (with selected rows in the Kazakh and Russian languages);

• Systematic catalog of unadapted literature in foreign languages;

• Systematic catalog “Multimedia library”;

• Numerical catalog.

Library Resources Acquisition and Catalogues Organization Division provides practical and consultative support for searching information through library catalogues:

• checking availability of a document in the library

• clarification of the bibliographic description of documents;

• clarification of documents’ location.

The Division renders services:

- Indexing of scientific, educational editions and articles prepared for publication (Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), Library-Bibliographical Classifications (LBC), State Rubricator of Scientific and Technical Information (SRSTI).
